Pineapples in your Christmas fruit salad?
Only two weeks until Christmas! Time flies. We will be here in La Ceiba until Friday, when we plan to travel to Puerto Cortes to catch up with Mercy Ships friends and to relax for a couple of days. We'll then travel across the country to Danli to spend Christmas with Luis family there.
Danli was a topic of conversation yesterday when we interviewed a pastor who is involved in hosting many medical teams. Turns out he is also from Danli, and about Luis' age... seems they played soccer together as children. Honduras is not a big place but people don't move around so much so it was a bit of a surprise for both!
Aside from my research I've become quite interested in the fruit industry here- there are miles of pinapple and banana plantations around here, and while the Americans we've talked to and company PR deny the existence of child labour and the exessive and unsafe use of chemical pesticides those who work in the towns and villages around the fields strongly argue the opposite. Seems there is a lot of health problems in this area caused by the plantations but I suspect most foreigners (including medical teams) who come here are quite ignorant of it. I am learning enough however to put me off buying Dole Pineapples ever again.
